with its 1,051 m it is the longest castle complex in Europe and also a masterpiece of medieval
defensive construction. It consists of six separate courtyards, which were secured by gates, moats and drawbridges. These had to be overcome in order to get into the inner courtyard and the principal castle ward.
Burghausen is an outstanding example of a sectional fortress. Due to its elevated geographical position on a mountain ridge it had major strategic importance.
Nowadays the castle gives the town its name and is the eminent landmark of the town - a kind of "town crown and majestic fortress all in one". Europe's longest castle invites visitors to stroll through the middle ages. Every year the castle festival and other historic events offer the opportunity to bring the middle ages back to life.
